The basics

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire… or you know, in the comfort of your own kitchen oven.

Roasted Chestnuts are the perfect snack to munch on this Christmas.

The Trick:

Look for healthy, unwrinkled shells with a glossy surface that are firm and feel heavy. Discard any nuts that look old or broken or have small holes (these could indicate worms).

What Ya Will Need:

1 lb bag of chestnuts

Preheat oven to 350Β°.

Sort through the chestnuts, discarding those that don’t fit the bill.

Using a sharp knife, make a 1/8-inch deep incision around each chestnut shell, reaching just to the flesh of the nut.

Spread nuts evenly on a baking sheet and roast in the oven for 30-40 minutes. The flesh should be exposed.

While hot, remove the shells and layering from the nuts and discard. Try using a kitchen towel to help rub stubborn shells off.

Eat as is or use in a variety of your favorite Chestnut recipes!
