A Visit to the Vineyards

We’re pretty excited for the nice weather ahead, and we take every chance we can get to be outside enjoying the weather. By now, you know we’re serious about our Summer wine drinking – between our wine selection, rosé gear, desserts, and pairings.

So the best place to find us this summer is drinking wine on the porch. And there’s only one thing cooler than drinking wine on the porch… drinking wine at a vineyard.

We’ve tracked down the best vegan-friendly wineries on Long Island, New Jersey, and the Finger Lakes. Take a day trip or make it a weekend excursion. Either way, you’re sure to find some great wine and beautiful scenery.

Visit the tasting rooms and plan your trip around the vineyard’s events. Here are our picks for the best wines to try, buy, and ways to get to each winery.

What are you waiting for? Get out of town… seriously. WAITT! Don’t forget to pack some snacks for your travels!

WOLFFER ESTATES VINEYARD

Head out east to the Hamptons and stop by the Wölffer Wine Stand on your way to the beach. If you have the time, stop by the estate for a tour and enjoy the tasting room that overlooks acres of sustainably grown grapes.

We recommend trying a tasting flight to find your favorite wine. Buy a bottle (or 5) to take back with you to the city. While you’re there, be sure to check out the grounds or enjoy a picnic in the sun. Hit up Naturally Good Foods Café in Montauk for some vegan snacks.

Try: Summer in a Bottle Rosé (bonus – the bottle is beautiful and doubles as the perfect summer gifts!)

Get there: LIRR to East Hampton Station or Hampton Jitney to East Hampton

SHINN ESTATE VINEYARDS

For another Long Island excursion, check out the beautiful North Fork. Our favorite vineyard in the area is the biodynamic Shinn Estate Vineyards.

Learn about their biodynamic wine-making process, take a tour of the grounds, and obviously have a taste. The property even includes a Farmhouse Inn where you can enjoy a quaint, relaxing getaway.

Try: 2014 Pinot Blanc and 2013 Wild Boar Doe

Get there: LIRR to Mattituck Station or Hampton Jitney to East Hampton

UNIONVILLE VINEYARDS

A short trip to New Jersey can get you to Unionville Vineyards. Check out their events calendar to go on a day when they have a paint and sip event on the patio.

They have a tasting room on site for some sippin’ and picnickers are welcome. Be sure to check out the many farmers markets in the area for fresh fruit to enjoy with your wine.

Try: Unionville Home Vineyard Chardonnay 2013 or Pheasant Hill Syrah 2012

Get there: NJ Transit to White House station

FOX RUN VINEYARDS

Take a summer excursion upstate to check out the Finger Lakes region. Fox Run Vineyards has a tasting room, guided tour, and market to explore.

Plan your trip around some of the local events like the Garlic Festival for additional activities.

Don’t worry about transporting all of the bottles back home – Fox Run retails all over the US, so you can get your favorite wines all year round.

Try: Rose 2015 or Ruby Port

Get there: Amtrak or Greyhound to Syracuse or drive

HUNT COUNTRY VINEYARDS

After visiting Fox Run Vineyards, travel over to Hunt Country Vineyards. The vineyard has several award-winning wines including the Vidal Blanc Ice Wine 2007.

While you’re in the area, be sure to take a bottle of wine to the Seneca Lake shore and watch the sunset.

Try: Vidal Blanc Ice Wine 2007 or Seyval Blanc 2014

Get there: Amtrak or Greyhound to Syracuse, or drive
