GOOGLY EYED SUCCULENTS AND MORE
Kelsie Hayes is not a traditional florist. Your hometown flower shop probably isn’t on Postmates, and we’d bet a lot of money that it doesn’t offer succulent “plant friends” decorated with hand-made googly eyes…leading us all to wonder, how have we survived all this time without Kelsie, and POPUPFLORIST?!?!
Working out of a charmingly tiny, and literally “blossoming” booth in the Meatpacking District of NYC, you also wouldn’t necessarily think that Kelsie has the capacity to serve up MAJOR projects and installations for the likes of Amazon, Stuart Weitzman and Soho House, just to name a few “no big deal” clients.
Kelsie has found her niche in the flower marketplace. She excels at creating fresh, beautiful arrangements, conceptualized in creative, exciting ways (i.e. her most recent- “let’s overfill an old shopping cart with flowers and greenery, and put it in the middle of 5th Ave!”). All of this for a price-point that doesn’t completely murder the wallet.
Having opened in 2016, Kelsie is already in as high-demand as possible, nationally. And the bud in the middle of it all? Kelsie is SO low-key, kind, cool and collected. Her secret? Being surrounded by the gorgeous fruits of her labor all day long, and knowing the joy her flowers bring, one might think it’s hard to be anything but. Talk about a #girlcrush.
We met Kelsie at her shop, for a flower-making tutorial inspired by by CHLOE., of course! Read more about Kelsie below, and check out today’s by CHLOE Instagram story for more BTS!
by CHLOE.: Introduce yourself.
KH: Hi! I’m Kelsie, owner of POPUPFLORIST, NYC based floral & (googly-eyed) plant design company.
bC: What inspired you to start POPUPFLORIST?
KH: I had been working in fashion and really wanted to start something of my own. I’ve always love florals but I wanted to think of a new and fresh approach. I thought POPUPFLORIST would be a fun side project but it’s really turned into an amazing business that I’m super proud of. We do events, dinners, and mailers but we also have this cool corner spot in the Gansevoort Market where we’re able to sell bouquets and fresh arrangements as well as plants and gifts! We prep for all of our events out of there and also fulfill online and Postmates orders!
bC: What is one of the most difficult things about starting your own company?
KH: Learning to give up control has been the hardest part!
bC: Oppositely, what is one of the most rewarding things about starting your own company?
KH: Seeing how happy our customers are, both at our events and our retail shop is always the most rewarding. It’s super validating to see the joy that our arrangements bring.
bC: Where do you see yourself, and your business in 5 years?
KH: Since starting POPUPFLORIST it’s really been organic growth. I have a few ideas for the future but I’m very excited to see the natural growth!
bC: What is a piece of advice that you live by?
KH: Do everything with integrity!
bC: What’s your favorite dish at by CHLOE.?
KH: I have more than one but my favorite favorite is the kale chocolate chip ice cream!
bC: What does “Eat well. Eat with purpose.” mean to you? This is the by CHLOE mission statement!
KH: Eating well is the most important thing you can do for yourself and your body. So many of us are on the go, especially New Yorkers, so having a healthy diet and routine is vital to success and health.
