Q+A WITH MAKEUP ARTIST, CAMPBELL RITCHIE

Just off the plane from Cannes Film Festival, Campbell Ritchie looks brighter and fresher than every. It’s no wonder- she IS a makeup artist after all. However, Campbell’s secret isn’t in complete coverage- it’s creating healthy, beautiful skin through QUALITY, plant-based products. This beauty guru has an impressive resume. From Victoria Secret Fashion Shows to the Met Gala and countless editorial and advertising campaigns (Cam did the makeup for our Daily Harvest collab!), Cam’s talent is no secret.

Aussie-born Campbell is pretty darn good at making others look amazing in the spotlight, but has no desire to be the center of attention herself. A makeup artist since she was a teenager, Cam’s popularity grew organically- through word-of-mouth. It doesn’t hurt that she has a charming Melbourne accent, and the ability to make everyone feel totally comfortable in her presence (relieving for clients with demanding schedules and early call-times). We met Cam for lunch, where she allowed us the (rare) chance to turn the lens around…

by CHLOE.: Hi Campbell! Thanks for chatting with us. We’ll let you introduce yourself.

CR: My name is Campbell Ritchie, originally from Melbourne, Australia. I am a makeup artist, journalist and Brand Ambassador and CEO of SKN101.

bC: You haven’t always lived a plant-based lifestyle. Tell us about your journey becoming vegan?

CR: I have had numerous health issues later on in my life. Going plant based and vegan has changed everything for me!! It’s the key to youth.

bC: Why do you choose to use plant-based makeup products?

CR: Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on use for entertainment or abuse in any other way. The impact cosmetics has on the planet is so vast. I want to do my part by consciously making an effect, and lead by example.

bC: How did you learn to become a makeup artist? Tell us about your path before choosing this career.

CR: I was a ballerina before. I trained in Russia and had a blossoming career. Due to a debilitating knee injury I went into makeup. I was fortunate to assist the greats in the makeup world, including Kevyn Aucoin, Francaise Nars, Dick Page, Val Garland and Diane Kendal. This was my education and introduction to this incredible industry.

bC: You are so good at what you do, and have such a range of styles! What’s your favorite “look” to apply, and to wear yourself?

CR: Look: clean, clean clean skin, revealing your best self by embracing your natural beauty. But, give me some glitter and color and I WILL paint your face. I’m an artist- the face is my canvas! I am very simple and only use cruelty-free skincare and makeup. My personal routine is very uncomplicated. I use tinted moisturizer with SPF to protect me from the sun, a little mascara and pinch my cheeks! That’s it. Occasionally I throw on a red lip and winged eye if I’m going out.

bC: Favorite part about your job?

CR: The diversity of my job and meeting new people. From working with youth, fashion brands, musicians and celebrities, to models and cancer patients.

bC: Favorite plant-based skincare brands?

CR: PIXI, Marc Jacobs, Flower Beauty, Hourglass and Charlotte Tilbury.

bC: Can you tell us anything about your book that we hear, is in the works?!

CR: It’s a secret- but it’s a coffee table book ?.

bC: Where do you see yourself, and your business in 5 years?

CR: My skincare brand launched, my book published. I’d like to live even more of a sustainable life, and encourage other brands to become natural and cruelty-free. Lastly, maybe have more children?

bC: What’s your favorite dish at by CHLOE.?

CR: Avocado Pesto Pasta (GF) and Smashed Avocado Toast on gluten-free bread. The Artichoke Dip is amazing, too!
