by CHLOE: Hi Happy Hippie Foundation! Thanks SO much for chatting with us. Tell us a little bit about yourself- your mission and what you do?

HH: The Happy Hippie Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by Miley Cyrus in 2014. Our mission is to rally young people to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBTQ youth and other vulnerable populations.

bC: What inspired Miley Cyrus to start The Happy Hippie Foundation?

HH: Miley generated worldwide attention for youth homelessness at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, where she launched a fundraising campaign to benefit My Friend’s Place, a resource center for youth experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles. And that was just the beginning! Inspired by the fact that 40% of homeless youth are LGBTQ, Miley launched the Happy Hippie Foundation in 2015 with Happy Hippie Presents: Backyard Sessions, a set of musical performances to raise funds and awareness for LGBTQ youth. Watch Miley explain more about the inspiration here!

bC: How is your foundation changing the tone and overall conversation surrounding the LGBTQ community?

HH: We are all about coming together to build the future we want to see- a world that is accepting, loving, safe and equal for all! And we know we have a long way to go. But we believe that using your platform to speak out makes a difference- whether it’s highlighting the positive stories of youth across the gender spectrum who are thriving thanks to the support of their loved ones or whether it’s calling out politicians with discriminatory policies. And creating a safe space where you know you can get help and community is so important. That’s why we focus our programs for thousands of LGBTQ youth nationwide on support services including counseling, case management, and meeting basic immediate needs to help build long-term well-being. If you need community, help or resources about gender, we’d love for you to join one of our Happy Hippie digital support groups with our partner Gender Spectrum, which are available for you to join online no matter where you live!

bC: What does “happiness” mean to your foundation?

HH: For us, happiness is feeling accepted, loved, celebrated and safe to be who you truly are, no matter how you identify. That’s why we’re committed to the fight for equality!

bC: Your team offers SO many ways to get involved! Tell us about a few?

HH: Here are some ways how you can help!

1. Stay connected with us on social and help us spread the word- we have the latest news updates and ways that you can support: @HappyHippieFdn

2. Contact our local New York partners to volunteer and give back locally: Hetrick Martin Institute and Ali Forney Center.

3. Donate to help support our work! All Happy Hippie operational costs are funded privately, so 100% of all donations directly benefit youth in need.

bC: We LOVE the limited-edition Converse PRIDE collection! Everything is so happy and cute! Tell us about this partnership- why was Converse a perfect fit?

HH: Miley described best in her interview with Vogue: “I have been a longtime advocate for equal rights, especially for the LGBTQ community. Converse has always represented self-expression and has no boundaries, so when we were developing this partnership it made sense to have a dedicated line for Pride month.”
