ROCKAWAY BEACH

VAMOS A LA PLAYA

If Nelly taught us anything, it’s that if “it’s getting hot in here,” we’re “taking off all our clothes.” Okay well maybe not all of them. We’re at least stripping down to our super cute bathing suits. Since that’s unfortunately not up to office “bis cas” standards… Let’s go to the beach, beach, let’s go to Rockaway! Get panic attacks at the thought of Penn Station? Does the idea of transferring at Jamaica en route to Montauk give you hives? You don’t have to subject yourself to the pains of the LIRR or NJ Transit to get to NYC’s closest beach.

With bars, restaurants, shops and miles of sand and ocean so close by, Rockaway Beach is a one-day-vay-kay worth taking. Get your towels ready for some fun in the sun!

HOW TO GET THERE:

TRAIN

All aboard! Complaining about the subway gives “can you believe this weather?” a run for its money in elevator small-talk, but it could be worse. Jumping on the E train beats waiting in stand-still traffic any day (cough LA cough, cough). Plus- the Rockaway subway station let’s you off just blocks from the beach! V convenient. Oh, and if you need something to pass the time we got you covered. Check out our fave podcasts!

FERRY
I’m on a boat and, it’s going fast and…Catch a ride to Rockaway via the Rockaway Express Ferry. For $2.75 you can get your butt on the beach in under an hour. Hop on at Pier 11 for some smooth sailing. Did we mention there’s alcohol and snacks on board, but more importantly alcohol? So, forgo the Rosé-filled-Sarbucks cup, because it’s totally acceptable to booze while you cruise.

ROAD TRIP

Get in loser, we’re going to Rockaway. Traveling via car will get you there in half the time, so hit up your friend that’s got wheels. If you are that friend, our sincerest apologies. Here are some tunes for your trip.

UBER/ LYFT / CAB

Dude where’s my car? If you’re lazy/strive for convenience/have one of those 50% off codes, you can always call one of these.

BUS?

I think it isn’t a thing anymore, but not sure.

SOOOOO MANY ACTIVITIES:

SURF’S UP

Looking to shred the gnar? Look no further than Locals Surf School. No experience or gear needed. Just come as is! They provide everything from wet suits to sunscreen. Get stoked, and soaked!

FUEL UP

Keeping a plant-based snack at arms-reach is essentially one of the vegan ten commandments.

However, hanger is real, and all that fun in the sun can be draining. After you’ve got enough Vitamin D for the day, get your sandy-self to Tacoway Beach. Located inside Rockaway Beach Surf Club, it’s just what your Instagram feed ordered. From the minute you walk in, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to the west coast. Their outdoor courtyard also hosts a ton of events, including surf videos and artist installations! Between the cool Cali vibes and tofu tacos, you won’t wanna leave this hideaway haven.

BOTTOMS UP

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere, and that place is Epstein’s Beach. Happy hour is 7 days a week, as it should be. When the day is done, get the night started right with cold drinks and live music (check their Instagram for upcoming shows).

Another bar favorite? The outdoor deck and tiki bar at Bungalow Bar and Restaurant will make you feel like your in the tropics. There’s no better way to end the day than watching the sunset with a piña colada in hand.

SHOP ‘TIL YA DROP

Off Season sells beachy and sporty must-have clothes designed and manufactured in NYC, as well as a curated selection of home decor and accessories. You aren’t going to find unique pieces like these elsewhere. Too many shopping bags to make it home? You don’t have to! Rent the beach loft above the store and spend the night in this airy and aesthetically pleasing apartment (think- hardwood floors, minimalistic decor and plants galore).
