Q+A with Olivia Locher
When you like what you do, you usually do a good job at whatever it is you are doing….right? Olivia Locher is a passionate NYC based photographer who has a ton of enthusiasm for her work. We’ve been stalking her amazing Instagram page for a while, and are THRILLED to finally be working together!
Olivia’s style is original, playful and fresh- perfectly fitting with the by CHLOE. brand. Follow the by CHLOE. Instagram so you don’t miss any of the work that Olivia does for us (we tag her!), and check out our Q+A below. Get inspired!
by CHLOE.: Hi Olivia! Thanks for chatting with us. How was your weekend? Do anything fun?
Olivia: My weekend was super fun! I photographed by CHLOE.’s beautiful sweets and tasted them afterwards! I’m still coming down from my sugar high. I also made two special Halloween related photographs for my ongoing, “How To,“ series and binge watched horror movies! I love Halloween season.
bC: We absolutely LOVE your work and aesthetic. Tell us about what inspires you!?
Olivia: I construct my images to be bright, crisp, and readable. Color always is a main component to my work and is always considered! I am inspired by the tension between the comedic and the tragic plus the pull of high vs low. I reference advertising (especially from the mid-century, “Madmen” era) and commercial photography, enabling me to create images that are instantly digestible and tailored for the digital age. I think most importantly I have a lot of fun making images, so it never feels like work for me.
bC: Do you have a favorite subject to photograph?
Olivia: I love photographing people! This beautiful thing happens when a camera is introduced to a conversation, everyone becomes an open book (myself included). I’ve photographed several people who were complete strangers but have become my best friends from the process of being photographed.
bC: You’ve been in NYC since ‘09- what’s your favorite thing about living here?
Olivia: I love that there is something for absolutely everyone to gravitate towards. There also is an endless number of incredible concerts, art exhibitions, restaurants, people to meet, etc... it’s sometimes hard to keep up! There is always something to do and in result it’s hard to not be inspired by the city and the experiences it has to share.
bC: You are super close with your brother, Brandon- also an artist! Tell us about what it’s like living together, and how you inspire each other.
Olivia: My brother, Brandon, and I have always been attached at the hip. He is 6 years older than I am. When I was 6 and he was 12 we decided to become vegetarians and we haven’t consumed any meat since then. We’ve always made drastic life decisions like these together, including the decision to both become full time artists. He moved to the city three years ago and we have been roommates ever since. It’s wonderful to have someone who you can be 100% honest with and know will always have your back. We share everything we are working on creatively with one another allowing us to have this beautiful in–house critique 24/7. I always encourage siblings to get to know one another because if you can see eye to eye it’s possibly the most rewarding friendship you may ever find.
bC: Tell us about some other interests or hobbies that you have.
Olivia: I’ve been practicing Transcendental Meditation for a few years now and I can’t imagine what my life would be like without it! The simple routine and discipline of sitting down to meditate grounds me. I enjoy hanging out with people and getting to know their life story. If I didn’t find photography, I would have probably been a good talk therapist. I am totally obsessed with cooking and baking, everyday it seems like I’m coming up with something new in my kitchen! Lastly, I have an incredible pet goldfish named Otto who knows all of my secrets!
