We do crazy things for our wellness. Crystals, cupping, cyrotherapy? There are tons of trends out there that promise to help us achieve our best health. Some of which require a bit more bravery than others…
You already might have stored activated charcoal in the “questionable- I’d rather not try” category, but we beg you to reconsider. Completely safe and 100% non-toxic, peeps have been taking advantage of its detoxifying benefits for almost 500 years.
From intestinal cleansing to teeth whitening, activated charcoal is the most buzzed about wellness tip of the moment. What does the “activation” behind the charcoal exactly mean, you might ask? Short answer= CHEMISTRY. Long answer= when charcoal combines with gasses at a high temperature, it is given chemical properties which allow it to bind to toxins in our bodies, and help push em’ out.
Unlike some other health remedies that taste YUCK, true activated charcoal is odorless and tasteless, which is why it can be consumed in so many appetizing ways (like ice cream!!!). No nose-plugging required.
See our favorite activated charcoal products, below!
On The Road– Did one tequila turn into four last night? Our by CHLOE. pressed juice with activated charcoal, lemon, pure maple syrup and filtered water will deliciously break that hangover fog.
Carbon Coco Tooth Polish– It might seem counter-intuitive to use dark black powder to whiten your teeth, but the charcoal actually lifts and removes stains. We like this 100% organic and natural version. Can’t add one more thing to your morning routine? Skip a step and go right for this toothbrush with charcoal bristles.
Petite Vour Face Mask– Activated bamboo charcoal and coconut extract help to absorb impurities and unclog pores. Or, get crafty and DIY with our recipe here! Slather your face and get glowing. We recommend warning your roommate that you will be trying this out before she comes home…
Herbivore Soap Bar– Gentle enough for daily use, this natural exfoliant will have your complexion clean and clear in no time (the branding is adorbs also).
Peanut Butter Krispie Treats
Makes 12 treats
Recipe courtesy of by CHLOE. Chef Contributor, Lauren Kretzer.
Ah, childhood– we get nostalgic for those simpler times when Friday nights meant hanging with Danny Tanner and Steve Urkel, when jelly bracelets were oh-so-chic, and wellness wasn’t yet “a thing” so we could eat all kinds of junk food with abandon so long as we had some peas and carrots at dinner time. One of our favorite snacks from our elementary school days? Rice Krispie treats– you know, that gooey mixture of butter, marshmallows and puffed rice cereal that you probably had to forsake once you started, you know, eating more vegetables and less processed crap? Good news, guys– we couldn’t go another day without enjoying this treat again, so we remade it, veganized it, and yes, even IMPROVED UPON IT by swirling in peanut butter.

Weekend Escape: Hudson, NY
We think you're gonna like it here
Our hearts belong to NYC, but sometimes the noise and crowded streets are A LOT to handle (#stressed), and we crave a little time away…
Enter, Hudson, NY. It’s a refreshing little gem of town, ideal for a NYC weekend escape. A two hour train from Grand Central takes you to this quiet, picturesque town on the river, that has all of your relaxing and re-charging needs. Bring your girls or your S.O for a few days of excellent dining, vintage haunts and hip coffee shops galore. Two days of wholesome fun in Hudson is all you need before returning to the city that never sleeps…
Check out our favs below, and today’s by CHLOE Instagram Story for more!
The Rivertown Lodge is an old movie theater converted into a hotel. Using local craftsmen and vintage Ebay finds, the owners outfitted their space into a minimalistic oasis. Complete with free-flowing, always-fresh & complimentary coffee, bikes to roam around town, and an excellent, all locally-sourced brunch, we dare you to find something wrong with this place…You’ll have to pry our hands off of the charming and quaint, mid-century bed post if you ever want us to leave.
Wm Farmer & Sons. Take a 20 minute stroll from the Lodge down the main street, Warren Street. Cozy-up in the dimly lit barroom and be served by bartenders wearing suspenders. Get the Shishito Peppers and the “No Meat and Three (Veggies)” plate, and a few Prescription Julep Cocktails (they use a recipe circa 1857!).
The place is stinkin’ with amazing coffee shops. Try Moto Coffee Machine and be prepared to sip your morning drip with people way cooler than you. Oh, and the motorcycle shop in the back (where vintage bikes are given makeovers by one of the owners) is hard to miss.
Looking for something a litter stiffer? The Spotty Dog- Books & Ale is pretty self-explanatory-ly awesome. Booze yourself among rows of books, and check out their events page for DJ’s, poetry and trivia nights.
There are plenty of hikes in the area, but if you really want to feel like the local that you aren’t, visit the nearby town of Leeds, NY. Go to the post office and walk 5 minutes down a dirt path to the coolest natural swimming hole EVER! Stop by the retro, Gracie’s Luncheonette down the street for a veggie wrap on your way out of town!
